Rehabilitate Brick – George Washington’s Birthplace National Monument

Terra Constructs performed the historic rehabilitation of two chimneys and two sets of exterior brick steps at Quarters 1 and Quarters 2 within George Washington’s Birthplace National Monument. The project focused on structural repairs that preserved both the physical integrity and historical character of the brick masonry elements while ensuring long-term durability.

The chimneys were stabilized through targeted repointing, selective brick replacement, and the use of reinforcement techniques that conformed to the original construction style. The brick steps underwent a similar restoration, including demolition of deteriorated sections, rebuilding with historically accurate materials, joint repair, and protective surface treatments designed to mitigate future deterioration.

All work was completed in accordance with National Park Service preservation standards and coordinated closely with on-site park personnel. Terra’s team ensured the use of appropriate mortars and brick types to maintain historical authenticity while executing work with minimal disruption to park operations and public access.

The successful completion of the project preserved key architectural features of the site and upheld the historic fabric of this nationally significant property, supporting the long-term stewardship of George Washington’s legacy.
