Project Overview:
Terra Constructs performed the critical stabilization of three historic pylons at Arlington National Cemetery along Memorial Avenue—originally constructed in 1932 to mark the ceremonial entrance to the grounds. The project was driven by structural settlement and tilt of up to five degrees due to poor soil conditions, requiring innovative engineering solutions to preserve both the monuments and their historic and symbolic value.
Working in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and National Park Service, Terra led a full design-build effort that included LIDAR documentation, structural monitoring, and the development of a complex jacking and realignment strategy. The 750-ton stone pylons were temporarily stabilized and gradually realigned using precision hydraulic lifting systems and load-bearing supports designed to minimize stress on the historic stone assemblies.
Additional scope included the installation of deep foundation elements, seismic and environmental resilience measures, and restoration of pylon bases and adjacent paving. The project was performed under strict safety protocols with continuous coordination to preserve the solemnity of the cemetery and public access to nearby routes.
The project successfully restored long-term stability to these nationally significant monuments, ensuring their preservation and continued symbolic presence at one of the most sacred sites in the United States.
